S&T harmonises the IT infrastructure for Leder&Schuh

Storage Migration, VMware Installation and Backup-/Restore-Optimisation

S&T Austria has renewed the IT infrastructure at Leder&Schuh. In the course of the harmonisation project the storage systems were modernized, 30 servers virtualized and a new more efficient back-up programme introduced. Leder&Schuh now benefits from the improved performance and greater flexibility of its IT infrastructure. The order covered a volume of 550,000 euros.
Leder&Schuh is clearly number 1 on the Austrian shoe market and likewise for the most part is leading the market in other European countries. With such well-known brands like Corti, Dominici, Humanic, Jello, Shoe4You and Top Schuh the Graz company generated 406.3 millions euro turnover in 2006 with over 3,000 employees in 298 branches in Austria, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Hungary. Beside its main interest of “fashion”, Leder&Schuh also remains the most modern state of the art company for IT infrastructure in order to support the umpteen thousand business processes which are expiring daily with more permanent quality, performance, availability and security. DI Hubert Petz, CPIO Leder&Schuh: “IT is comparable to the nervous system. If one leg does not work anymore, the whole body limps. Think about a runner for which each second counts. He can no longer be certain of winning a race, perhaps he can no longer run at all. With such a competitive market like ours one must likewise react flexibly and quickly.”

Three large projects

S&T has renewed three central areas of the IT nerve system at Leder&Schuh. Since the company urgently required more storage space, two identical EMC storage solution CX500 systems were implemented, all date migrated and a five year maintenance contract set up. The efficiency of the storage increased so dramatically that maintenance costs dropped. In addition instead of 20 new physical servers only two were implemented and equipped with a redundant VMWare solution. Subsequently another ten servers were virtualised in order to further increase flexibility and speed for the change of server. Over and above that, S&T Austria, together with experts from Leder&Schuh, introduced a two-level back-up programme – on the first level a virtual disc-libary EMC DL 210 with 24 terra byte capacity and on the second level a back-up system for producing mediums for relocation. As a result, the performance of backup and restore was clearly increased as well as the time required for a full-back up reduced from 18 hours to 9 hours. Georg Komornyik, Managing Director, S&T Austria: “Leder&Schuh decided on an all-round renewal and is now enjoying the benefits: lower costs, greater flexibility, server maintenance without down-time, better performance of the systems as well as more simplified management of the infrastructure.”
